The bible stated in 1Timothy 5:8 that a man that refuses to provide for the needs of his family is worse than an infidel. So, can we really blame a man for leaving home so early in the morning in pursuit of wealth? Can we blame a man for spending days away from his family in pursuit of wealth? I guess we can’t. A responsible man must provide financially for his family.

But wait a minute, what happens if the man looses the same family while preoccupied with the act of providing! Will that make any sense? There is a trend that I have been observing for some time now and I have caught myself joining the bandwagon on several occasions – the Absentee Daddies Club. Are you a member? It is quite unfortunate that so many married men are sacrificing the future of their family in their bid to provide for the physical needs of the same family.

I journey about 28km daily from home to work, some men cover over 30km. Since the transportation system is poor and the roads are in terrible shape, it is common to see a man who leaves his family as early as 5a.m (while the little ones are still sleeping). After close of work, he is kept on the road for another 2 to 3hours (traffic problem) before he gets back home. Your guess is as good as mine, the little ones would have gone to bed before his arrival 🙁 .

In some homes, the matter is made worse by the fact that the mother too is a career woman who works outside the home (Some women belong to the Absentee Mothers Clubthat is double tragedy!). So, the little ones are left at the mercy of employed helps. Can you imagine a teenager learning all there is to know about sex straight from Cable Television! How can we turn around and blame them for engaging in premarital sex and committing abortion? The ADC is to blame for many of those ills we are seeing in our society.

If you have, I want to plead with you that you revoke your membership immediately (I already revoked my membership). Remember the story of Prophet Eli. He was busy doing the work of the temple but neglected his primary assignment (the bible states in 1Timothy 3:4-5 that he that cannot take care of his own family is not fit to be a leader of God’s children, so you don’t have an excuse)

Mind you the Adversary is the life-president of that club. They have so many enticing packages that are made available to members e.g. Extra Time Allowance, Out of Town Allowance, Job Bonus etc. Fellow members offer free exhortation on how you can compensate for your absence at home by supplying extra luxury e.g. Bigger House, New Car, New TV set, etc (they never do give accurate information on the state of affairs in their home).

If you truly love your family (I know you do), why will you loose them while struggling to provide for their needs. Set your priorities right. Consider the consequence of being absent when you are supposed to be defending your titleDaddy (or Mummy). Those are responsibilities that can never be delegated successfully. Remember, you are a steward; a day shall come when you will be required to render account to the Master! May you not be found wanting! Shalom

Great post. I have always tried to dedicate quality time not only to my child but my husband as well. Providing for one’s children is good but then, there should be a balance. Father’s are usually the culprit here, but i must say that both parents has a role to play in the upbringing of the children. Father’s role is quite different from the mother’s. We should all try to be the better parent that we can because we will surely give account of what we did with the children he has left in our care (Ps 127:3).

We all fall sometime, when we misplace our priorities. Not that I can boast that I am now perfect, just that we need to often remind one another. It is nice having you come around. I will surely reciprocate
